I started my career in the Treasurer’s Office through a Shelton High School work program in 1979, and have had the privilege to serve as Treasurer to the taxpayers and residents of the Mason County since 2001.

As the custodian of all funds for the county and special purpose districts, the Treasurer provides essential services in connection with the financial operation of local government. Primary responsibilities include: the safety and liquidity of pubic funds, billing, collecting and distributing property taxes, special assessments, excise taxes, gambling taxes, and miscellaneous receipts. Accounting for all funds and deposits of revenue for the State, County, City and Junior Taxing Districts (e.g., schools, fire and ports). Administering short and long term debt financing, cash management, Investing of monies and managing the provision of banking services for the County and Junior Taxing Districts.

Coroner Wes Stockwell is a Mason County native. He was born in Shelton and grew up on Island Lake. He is a 1976 graduate of Shelton High School.

Wes served 26 years with the Washington State Patrol; the last twelve years he served as the sergeant for the Mason County Detachment. During his state patrol career, Wes worked alongside coroners and medical examiners and became interested in pursuing a career as a coroner.

In 2006, Wes was elected Mason County Coroner.

Wes has earned a masters degree in public administration. In addition to his 26 years of investigative experience, he has passed national level death investigation certification examinations conducted by the American Board of Medico-legal Death Investigators (ABMDI). He also received death investigation training in New York City conducted by the New York City Medical Examiner.

Wes looks forward to continuing his public service as your coroner.

Pat has been employed in this office since January 1972, elected in November of 1984 to fill an unexpired term, and sworn into office the day following certification of the election. Monty has been an attorney for fifteen years with over twelve of those years spent as a prosecutor. Prior to coming to Mason County in 2003, Monty also worked as an Assistant Attorney General and in private practice. Currently Chief Deputy Prosecutor, Monty provides legal advice and representation to all County departments and offices, reviews all incoming felony cases and assigns those cases to deputy prosecutors, and supervises the various departments in the Prosecutor’s Office. Monty has helped guide the County to compliance with the Growth Management Act and grappled with the unique legal problems brought on by the worst economic crunch in recent memory.

Monty is admitted to practice law before the Washington Supreme Court, US District Court (E. District of WA), and the United States Supreme Court. He has also argued numerous cases before state and local administrative boards. Monty is also Alternate Director to the WA Counties Risk Pool for Mason County.

Monty received his law degree from Gonzaga and has Bachelors and Masters degrees from Western WA University. Until a year ago, he still had his last pair of barn boots from when quit farming to go to law school (someday he’ll forgive Wendy for tossing them out).

I am proud of the accomplishments of my office and my exceptional staff over the past three and a half years. Above all, we are dedicated to customer service and to integrity, and I feel that our day to day performance has been a reflection of that commitment.
In spite of significant budget restraints we have still managed to competently handle our wide array of responsibilities including elections, licensing, recording, and financial services for the county.
Yet, more importantly, it is my belief that citizen involvement is the heartbeat of our political system. For my office, accountability and transparency are principles we live by, not just campaign slogans. Whether by conducting fair and unbiased elections, promptly responding to public records requests, or providing accurate and unvarnished budget information to the commissioners and to the public, we have proven our commitment and ability to facilitate citizen involvement in the affairs of our government. For me, that is what public service should be.
